Dr. Atkins completed his Residency at Duke University Medical Center where Dr. Atkins was recognized for his excellence with the Cannon-Cabarrus Fellowship. From there Dr. Atkins spent 5 years in Tulsa Oklahoma where he served on the Clinical Faculty of the Tulsa Campus of the OU School of Medicine Teaching Residents and Medical Students. Dr. Atkins has 24 years of private practice experience, is a Fellow in the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and has been Certified by the CAP as an expert in Multidisciplinary Breast Pathology.

During his career he has served as Chief of the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Director of Breast Prognostic Factor Analysis and Immunohistochemistry, Director of Quality Management, Market Lead of the Orlando Group of Forward Pathology Solutions at all HCA Facilities within the Orlando Market. Dr. Atkins currently serves as the North Florida Division Medical Director of Forward Pathology Solutions, covering 10 HCA Facilities, as well as the Medical Director of the North Florida Division IRL Laboratory in Alachua Florida.
